I sigh and sit down, risking getting hit. Looking around I can see others like me, others that no longer live. I breath, yes, but I do not LIVE. Hearing the clank of heavy work boots, the kind guards wear, nearing I get back to work. As I start so move I feel the slight weight on the right foot and look down at the shiny metalic band around my ankle and sigh agin.

Perhaps I should explain whats going on. I am a shapshifter by the name of 'datenshi'. I have a big problem. What is the problem? Shapeshifters and humans are born slaves. The slaves work in wars and in laboring for the 'masters'. My master is a vampire, named darnith. His name isnt that important I suppose, I never get to see him anyway.

In this excuse for a life, I have one goal. One only. I look and brush the soot from my eyes and se a small light and two words escape my lips,
"Freedom awaits..."







Chapter 1
opening the gate


"Datenshi, are you listening to me?"

The cold and harsh voice snaps me from my daydream. I had been called up to se master, but I dont know why. Could they have read my mind? I gulp and my eyes look around the room, it seems normal. A desk and two chairs. I keep looking down, afriad to look into his eyes. Then his voice pipes up agin

"Look at me."

It wasnt a requst, but a order. I slowly and grudgingly look up into his eyes, then wish I hadnt. They have no soul. He isnt even trying to hide his evil aura now, meaning one thing. I was sent here to die. My head feels light and I nearly fall over. I am going to die. I am going to DIE. No, no I cant, I must think of somthing.

He smirks and pulls somthing from under the desk, shiny, and deadly. A gun is in his hand, now people might say that becuse I am not human I cant be killed normaly. If a bullet goes through my heart, I am as dead as you would be. I break out in a cold sweat

"I know your thoughts datenshi... We cant have them here, you understand? No hard feelings... You cant shapeshift for war and cannot control any magic, you are usless. Goodbye."

I stare transfixed as the finger presses down on the trigger. It happens in slow motion, but as the bullet starts to come out I close my eyes and suddenly, time stops.

where am I? I cant speak...

That went through my mind. I seemed to be in a fire, but wasnt hurt. I then feel a urge to go forward through the flames. Instead of hurting and burning me, the flames seem to make me stronger. I see a orb, small. It is probaly about the size of a normal fist, ornge and nontransparent. It is floating in the room. I look at it then I go over and grab it, there is a bright light and then, I am back.

I raise my arms and then the bullet misses, I am amazed. Then I look down and see the ground, ten feet below me. I never had been good with hights, I squaked, wait, I squaked? I turn my head and see wings, not arms. I open my mouth only to find I have a beak. There is a crack in the ceiling.

Now, I dont know my size. I figured though, anything was better than landing, and he was realodin the gun already. I made up my mind without even a second hesintation, I dart to the crack, then I hear him cock the gun

"That wont save you now!"

He says and I close my eyes and as I move I think my heart stops. I am so close, the bullet goes off just as I go in, it nips the tail feathers. I can fit, but its hard. Now at this point some of you may be wondering, if he is a vampire, why doesnt he turn to a bat and chase me?

Besuse that my friend, is bullshit. Same with the cross things.

I know there isnt enough room for me to make it to the other side, but if I was a mouse there would be. I consintrait hard, thinking of a mouse, but nothing is happining. He will eventuly get a ladder or somthing. I know that.

After ten minutes I am tired and give up. I will die. I dicide it is easyst to give in. I look saddly around, then notice a sight I hadnt seen in so long, daylight. I look in amazment down, the crack led outside! I then heard a voice, or at least I think I did. Mabye I am just going crazy, but it said

"freedom awaits"

I then saw a perfect vision of a mouse in my mind and transformed. I dont know how, but I think that gave the extra boost, I didnt have much time. I ran as fast as my little mouse legs would let me and I closed my eyes while lowering my head. I heard the ladder clank down on the entrance and he climed up. I ran and my heart was beating faster than I could handle.

My breath fails me. I am suffecating, but dont stop running. A bullet whizes past my head, taking fur and part of my side with it. I cry out. I keep running. I am in pain, almost dead when suddenly there is no ground below me. I look down the hundred and twenty feet to the ground and then I think

come on, lets do that bird agin...

It works. Just before I hit the ground and its over I open my wings and swoop up. I keep flying untill I think I will die if I go any further, I change back to a human shape. I colapse on the ground, and of all things, laugh. I smile and a tear runs down my face. I then say, in a voice I dont even recinize

"I am free."
